The 22nd Liwa Date Festival, organized by the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, officially opened in Liwa City, Al Dhafra Region, with farmers submitting nearly three tonnes of fresh rutab (dates) on the first day of the event.
The opening day witnessed strong participation from farmers across the UAE, along with productive families and visitors, reflecting the festival’s continued role in supporting the country’s agricultural sector and preserving its heritage linked to the date palm.
Judging committees began evaluating entries across multiple competition categories, with submissions assessed based on quality, size, colour, ripeness, and overall condition. The festival provides a platform for farmers to showcase their produce while encouraging the exchange of agricultural knowledge and best farming practices.
Running until 23 July, this year’s edition features 23 competitions and 295 prizes valued at more than AED 8 million. The competitions cover fresh rutab, fruits, model farms, date beauty contests, and creative categories inspired by the date palm. Winners will be announced throughout the festival.
Held in Liwa City, approximately two hours from Abu Dhabi, the festival is open to the public with free entry.
Since its inception more than two decades ago, the Liwa Date Festival has become one of the UAE’s key heritage and agricultural events. Organized by the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, it aims to preserve traditional farming practices, support local farmers, promote sustainable agriculture, and reinforce the cultural and economic importance of the date palm as a symbol of Emirati heritage and food security.
