Dubai Municipality organized the third edition of the Dubai Food Safety Forum in line with World Food Safety Day, observed under the theme “Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected.” The event gathered representatives from the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, along with academic institutions.
The Forum focused on the role of science in policymaking and risk management related to food safety. Discussions covered how science-based surveillance systems can support resilient food supply chains and encourage consumers to make informed, sustainable choices. The initiative reflects Dubai Municipality’s efforts to support a safe and efficient food system that contributes to public health and long-term food security.
His Excellency Eng. Marwan Ahmed Bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said:
“At Dubai Municipality, we believe that food safety starts with knowledge — understanding the challenges and pursuing solutions that lead to practical outcomes. The Dubai Food Safety Forum provides a scientific platform to consider the future of food systems and develop approaches that support community health, quality of life, and resource sustainability.”
He added: “We remain focused on building a sustainable food ecosystem aligned with international standards — one that relies on research, innovation, best practices, and collaboration across sectors.”
HE Mohamed Saeed Al Nuaimi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, said:
“The third Food Safety Symposium in Dubai comes at a time when global food supply chains face increasing complexity. This forum allows for the exchange of scientific knowledge, regulatory insights, and best practices among stakeholders at various levels. Observing World Food Safety Day under the theme ‘Food Safety: Science in Action’ highlights the UAE’s commitment to a science-based approach in protecting public health and strengthening food systems.”
He further noted: “Food safety remains central to the UAE’s National Food Security Strategy 2051. With support from government bodies, academic institutions, and private sector partners, the Ministry continues to advance an integrated food safety system. Key initiatives include the ‘ZAD’ unified food trade portal and the Biosecurity Early Notification System, both of which enhance standards and support efficient food trade across the UAE.”
He concluded: “The UAE is working with FAO to develop a new strategic index to evaluate national food control systems using the latest scientific standards. This aligns with our objectives of safeguarding health, encouraging investment in agri-food sectors, and ensuring sustainable food systems for future generations.”
Dr Ahmed Mokhtar, Acting Regional Programme Leader and Senior Economist at FAO’s Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa, acknowledged the UAE’s focus on science and governance in food safety: “According to FAO estimates, foodborne illnesses affect nearly 600 million people annually, resulting in over USD 110 billion in economic losses in low- and middle-income countries. Science plays a critical role in guiding food safety risk assessments and policy decisions that aim to protect public health and build confidence in food systems.”
During the Forum, Dubai Municipality announced that registration is now open for the 19th edition of the Dubai International Food Safety Conference, scheduled to take place from 17 to 19 November 2025 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Organised in partnership with FAO, the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP), and the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA), the conference is expected to bring together more than 3,000 participants including international experts, researchers, and sector leaders.
To mark World Food Safety Day, Dubai Municipality also launched the second edition of the Dubai Food Elite programme, which recognizes achievements in food safety, nutrition, sustainability, innovation, and social responsibility among food establishments in Dubai. This year, the programme aims to include over 500 establishments. Applications will open on 15 June, with winners to be announced at the upcoming Dubai International Food Safety Conference.
