Antar and Abla, Abu Dhabi’s first Arabic opera, presented by Bidaya and produced in collaboration with creative partners including Pico and Opera Lebano will open to the public on December 12 at the International Tennis Centre, Zayed Sports City. A preview held last night offered an early look at the production, which has transformed the venue into a dedicated performance space for the three-day run.
The production features the Lanzhou Symphony Orchestra, whose score accompanies the on-stage movement with a clear, cohesive structure. Performers, dancers, and visual elements—including projection, lighting, and film-style design—bring a contemporary presentation to the well-known story while maintaining its traditional narrative. The team completed the venue transformation in ten days, installing a 300-square-metre stage and large LED screens to frame the performance.
Opening during the UAE’s Year of Community, the opera aims to encourage access to cultural experiences for a wide audience. Families, new opera attendees, and those interested in Arab heritage will be able to experience the production through complimentary public entry.
Imane Alsalem Tlamid, CEO of Bidaya, said: “Bringing Antar & Abla to Abu Dhabi is a meaningful artistic moment that reflects our belief in the strength of Arab heritage and its ability to inspire when presented through a contemporary creative lens. The story of Antar speaks to values of courage, loyalty and character that remain deeply rooted in our cultural identity.”
