Salalah’s Khareef Season Continues To Attract Regional Visitors During GCC Summer

Khareef continues to contribute to Oman’s summer tourism, offering visitors from across the GCC an alternative seasonal travel destination.

The annual Khareef season has returned to Oman’s Dhofar Governorate, bringing cooler temperatures, mist-covered mountains and lush green landscapes that continue to attract visitors from across the GCC during the summer months.

Running from mid-July through September, Khareef, which means “autumn” in Arabic, is a seasonal monsoon that transforms the region with light rainfall, cloud cover and temperatures ranging between 20°C and 30°C. The weather change turns the area’s typically dry terrain into green hills, flowing waterfalls and water-filled valleys, making Salalah one of the region’s most visited seasonal destinations.

August marks the peak of the season, when waterfalls are at their fullest and the landscape is at its greenest. September offers similar scenery with comparatively lighter rainfall and fewer crowds, making it another preferred period for travellers.

Among the key attractions during Khareef is Wadi Darbat, known for its waterfalls, lakes and boating experiences. Al Mughsail Beach combines a scenic coastline with natural blowholes and cliffs, while Jebel Samhan offers mountain drives and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the valleys below. Ayn Athum Waterfall is another popular stop during the season, and Haffa Souq provides visitors with an opportunity to explore traditional Omani products, including frankincense, spices, perfumes and handicrafts.

The Khareef season also coincides with the annual Salalah Tourism Festival, typically held throughout August. The festival features cultural performances, traditional music and dance, family entertainment, food stalls, shopping experiences and exhibitions showcasing Omani heritage.

Visitors to the region can also experience local cuisine, including traditional dishes such as Shuwa, Mashuai and Omani halwa. Owing to Dhofar’s seasonal climate, the region is also known for its fresh coconuts, bananas and papayas, which are widely available during the season.

Travellers planning a visit are advised to carry light waterproof clothing, comfortable walking shoes suitable for wet terrain and an extra layer for cooler evenings. The season’s outdoor attractions often involve extended time outdoors, making portable charging devices a useful addition.

Salalah is accessible from the UAE by both road and air. Many travellers opt for road trips to explore the changing landscapes along the route, while seasonal direct flights provide a convenient option for shorter visits.

With its distinctive seasonal climate, natural attractions and cultural experiences, Khareef continues to contribute to Oman’s summer tourism, offering visitors from across the GCC an alternative seasonal travel destination.
