Saudi Arabia to Build $1 Billion Sky Stadium Ahead of 2034 FIFA World Cup

Saudi Arabia has announced that one of its key venues for the 2034 FIFA World Cup will be the Neom Stadium, also known as Sky Stadium, a $1 billion structure integrated into The Line, the country’s upcoming linear city development. Suspended 350 meters above the desert floor, the stadium will offer a unique architectural and engineering approach to hosting international sporting events.

The Neom Stadium is one of 15 venues that will be used during the tournament and will accommodate up to 46,000 spectators. Positioned at the top of the mirrored vertical megastructure of The Line, the stadium will be constructed with a focus on design, functionality, and sustainability. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027 and is expected to be completed by 2032, two years ahead of the World Cup.

Set to host matches from the group stage through the quarterfinals, the Neom Stadium is part of a broader $20 billion national infrastructure plan for the 2034 World Cup. In total, eight new stadiums are being constructed, and four existing venues will undergo major redevelopments across five key regions: Riyadh, Jeddah, Al Khobar, Abha, and Neom.

The stadium’s exterior will feature mirrored surfaces and LED elements designed to integrate with the surrounding environment. The interior will follow a compact seating bowl configuration, with a focus on visibility and acoustics. The structure will be powered entirely by renewable energy, in line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objectives for sustainable urban development.

Electric transit systems will provide access to the stadium, which will be part of a larger sports district in Neom that includes training facilities, accommodation, retail outlets, and recreational spaces. Following the World Cup, the venue is expected to serve as a permanent hub for sports and entertainment events.
