In a major move set to bolster Dubai’s standing as a global hub for mega-events and exhibitions, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, has approved a AED 10 billion expansion plan for the Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC) at Expo City Dubai. The expansion is integral to the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and will transform the DEC into the largest purpose-built indoor venue in the region for events and exhibitions.
Once completed, the DEC will feature a total exhibition space of 180,000 square meters across 26 halls, spanning 1.2 kilometers in a single level. The project is expected to be completed in three phases, with the first phase scheduled for completion in 2026.
Vision for Global Excellence
In his statement, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said, “This iconic venue will not only become the largest indoor exhibition and events destination in the region but also set new global standards for excellence in the industry. We are committed to consolidating Dubai’s status as a global leader in the events and exhibitions sector.”
Sheikh Mohammed further emphasized the role of events in connecting people, ideas, and opportunities, driving economic growth, boosting tourism, and contributing to Dubai’s emergence as a global economic hub.
Strategic Phases of Expansion
The master plan for the DEC’s expansion outlines three key phases. By 2026, the venue will expand its current 58,000 square meters of exhibition space to 140,000 square meters in Phase 1. The second phase, scheduled for completion in 2028, will add another 20,000 square meters of space, along with upgraded infrastructure and multi-story parking facilities. The final phase, slated for 2031, will bring the total exhibition space to 180,000 square meters, accommodating one mega-event or up to 20 smaller events simultaneously.
In addition to the vast exhibition space, the DEC will host a 300-room hotel, retail outlets, office spaces, and an industrial kitchen, offering fully integrated operations to support large-scale events.
Boost to Dubai’s MICE Industry
His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of Dubai World Trade Centre Authority (DWTCA), emphasized the economic potential of the expansion, noting that the DEC will be pivotal in tripling the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) sector’s contribution to Dubai’s economy to AED 54 billion annually by 2033. The DEC will serve as the new home for major events, enabling Dubai to double the number of large-scale events hosted each year, from around 300 today to over 600 by 2033.
“The expansion of the Dubai Exhibition Centre will propel the next phase of the MICE sector’s evolution, building on our regional leadership and advanced event-hosting capabilities to drive sustainable growth and economic progress,” Almarri said.
A New Era for Global Exhibitions
The expansion of the DEC is part of a broader vision for Expo City Dubai, which is being positioned as a future urban center with a focus on innovation and sustainability. The development aligns with Dubai’s Economic Agenda D33, which aims to solidify the emirate’s status as a leading global hub for business and tourism.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai World Trade Centre Authority, highlighted how the expansion will integrate with the city’s future growth plans, including the ongoing development of Al Maktoum International Airport, which is set to become the world’s largest.
“This expansion has been strategically planned to align with the visionary goals of Expo City Dubai, the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, and the recently announced expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport,” Sheikh Ahmed said. “The synchronised development of this urban hub showcases Dubai’s forward-thinking approach in establishing a blueprint for a future city.”
A Thriving Hub for Global Events
The DEC will play a key role in enhancing Dubai’s calendar of global events across various sectors, including technology, healthcare, energy, real estate, and financial services. It will also create new platforms for sectors such as media, entertainment, and tourism to thrive, aligning with Dubai’s ambition to be one of the top three global destinations for tourism and business.
Once complete, the expanded DEC will surpass the size of the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre (DICEC) by 1.5 times, marking a new chapter in Dubai’s role as a global events and exhibitions leader.
The Dubai Exhibition Centre at Expo City Dubai is poised to redefine the region’s events industry and reinforce Dubai’s role as a model of global innovation, connectivity, and economic growth.
